The security guard in my building is this really cool older dude. He work’s nights and I often see him when i’m doing late night laundry or coming home from an evening out. Tonight we chatted for a bit and he was excited to tell me about a discovery he had made. He needed to get a root canal done and was saying how his dentist had quoted him about $600. This was something that he needed to get done however the cost was just out of his budget. He said how he wished there was universal health care for seniors but since there wasn’t he did some research. He found that UBC Dentistry takes patient’s during the school year and they quoted him about half the price. He was obviously very excited and was looking forward to his consultation. *
This got me thinking. In light of the recent protest’s like occupy Vancouver and the like were citizen’s are protesting the imbalance between the rich and the poor. Instead of sitting in tents for all of infinity with hopes of attracting attention from said rich people why don’t we work together as a collective and actually put in motion something that will affect society and bring about change?
I don’t disagree that there is an imbalance nor do I think that the gap is not widening between the rich and the poor but I think the approach taken is painful and typical of this generation. I think we should play hard ball instead! I think that the rich look down on tent city and think how unaffected they are by the peasant protests except maybe to gripe about how much their tax dollars are being wasted on maintaining such a noneffective eye sore.
Instead why don’t we stop listening to Jim Pattinson radio stations? Or shopping at Save on Foods? Or Buying car’s from his dealerships? Why don’t we just hit them were it hurts? In their bottom line! **
Instead of twit picing from our iphone’s whist wearing our Canuck’s jersey’s and swinging around our LV bags? *** And then disappearing back to our parents house when the rain starts and the tent’s are to cold because we are hungry and the shelves at our parents are stocked with food and the rent is already paid for ****
I think it’s important to think outside the box there is always another way to look at a problem and always another way to go about creating change. Just like my friend the security guard who found another way to solve his.
* This completely melted my black heart
** Thanks BKB for the sold example much better then my original attempt with becel
*** No offensive to Canucks fan’s (you all know my love for Bieksa) as well as to LV, Marc Jacobs as we all know can do no wrong as I often dream of is fall 2011 collection. The example is just more towards consumerism in general.
****stevez props to you here as we shared the same example of twit picing Canuck’s fans
