When you try your best, but you don’t succeed
When you get what you want, but not what you need
When you feel so tired, but you can’t sleep
Stuck in reverseCOLDPLAY
I had a great conversation with my friend, errr sorry co-worker (;-)) MG the other day. We were discussing this feeling of being left behind. You get to this point or maybe just an age where you are supposed to be or expected to be married or having baby’s or having a high powered job, yet no matter what you have done to prepare you are not quite there yet.
Every time you get a call from a friend it’s because they have met this milestone and as happy you are supposed to be for them it still kinda just feels like a swift punch in the throat.
I think this can be applied to anyone really if you’re single, you feel you should be in a serious relationship. If you are attached you feel like you should be married. If your renting your should be owning. There is always something “they” think you should be doing, seeing, buying, and feeling.
My brother and I often hit up our favourite breakfast joint (Sophie’s Cosmic Cafe.) Where over breaky we vent about work, school, relationships etc. There is this uhhhmazing photo from the Vancouver artist Ken Lum, Titled “Melly Shum Hates Her Job”. (See above)
I have been in love with this photo for such a long time and it often reminds me of this sense of being left behind. I often just want to jump into this photo and give my homegirl Melly a hug and tell her that, “she’s not the only one.”
For me it boils down to this. There are certain things that are within your control so figure out what they are, make a jam plan and get to it.
There are other things that are not and life rarely goes according to plan or schedule. So it is imperative to embrace a happy medium while pursing your jam plans. Don’t get too caught up in a schedule or meeting expectations imposed by “them” or “they”. Because who are “they” anyways?
I try to cultivate the moments as they come and not chase the rabbit. I enjoy the moment’s that I have with people because most things in life are quite fleeting.
There are a lot of pretty awesome things that you do have and by focusing on the things you don’t just takes you down the rabbit hole of no return.
Sorry? Oh! Of course, I WILL step down from my apple box now! ;-)
